The Three Headlight Technologies, at a Glance
The quick comparison:
- Halogen — incandescent tech, about 1,000 to 1,500 lm, 500 to 1,000 hr life, cheapest, universal fit, warm yellowish light.
- HID / Xenon — gas-discharge, 3,000+ lm, 2,000 to 3,000 hr, needs ballast, 2 to 5s warm-up, bluish light, higher cost.
- LED — solid-state, 3,000 to 8,000+ lm per bulb, 30,000 to 50,000 hr, instant, compact, low draw, moderate cost.

Brightness and Light Quality
Halogen is the dimmest and yellowest. HID is very bright but can be too blue and scatters in reflector housings. LED offers a clean white beam, instant-on, and a well-controlled pattern when engineered properly — the best balance for night driving.
Lifespan and Reliability
This is where LED wins outright. Halogen burns out every year or two under night-driving use; HID ballasts fail after a few thousand hours; LED is rated for tens of thousands of hours and typically outlasts the car.
Energy Efficiency
LED draws a fraction of the power of halogen or HID for the same or better light, reducing load on the alternator and battery — useful for start-stop cars and accessories such as light bars.
Installation and Compatibility
Halogen is universal and simple. HID needs a ballast and careful housing matching. LED is plug-and-play in most cars but, as covered in our H7 guide, may need a CANBUS decoder or retaining adapter on some European models.
Cost Over Time
Halogen is cheapest up front but you rebuy it constantly. HID has high upfront and ballast-replacement cost. LED costs more than a halogen bulb once, then essentially nothing for the rest of the vehicle life — making it the lowest total cost for anyone who drives at night.
Which One Should You Choose?
Our recommendation by situation:
- Tight budget, occasional night driving, older car — keep halogen.
- Want maximum raw brightness and do not mind a ballast — HID, but only in proper projector housings.
- Want the best all-round upgrade: bright, instant, long-lived, low power, plug-and-play — LED.
Frequently Asked Questions
Are LED headlights worth the money?
For anyone who drives at night, yes. The longer life and better light quality offset the higher upfront cost, and total cost of ownership is lower than halogen.
Can I mix technologies (for example, LED low beam, halogen high beam)?
Yes, as long as each socket is the correct type for that position. Many cars naturally run different sockets for low and high beam.
Do LED bulbs need a ballast?
No. Unlike HID, LED bulbs have the driver built into the base — no separate ballast to mount or fail.
Will LED headlights drain my battery?
No. They draw less power than halogen, so they reduce electrical load rather than increase it.
Are HID and Xenon the same thing?
Yes — Xenon is the gas used in HID (High-Intensity Discharge) headlights. The terms are used interchangeably.
